On-Line Therapy in Los Angeles

Online-therapy was unheard of until recently. Since having a virtual therapy session is relatively new, it can feel a little strange, especially if you've never experienced it. I have found that it becomes comfortable quickly and it is effective.

Following are tips to help you prepare.

  • It's essential to have a strong internet connection so that the connection between you and your therapist can happen with little to no technology interference.

  • You’ll need a device with a camera to be seen and heard by your therapist. A smartphone will be adequate; however, I have found a couple of reasons for having your session using a computer to be better. First, a computer or laptop stands by itself (you don't have to hold your phone). Your therapist will have a more stable image. Secondly, the internet connection seems to work better than a phone or tablet.

  • Headphones or earbuds enable the therapist to hear you more clearly and add privacy because only you hear the therapist.

  • Be in a location where there is privacy and that you won't be 'walked-in-on' during your session. If you are at home, ask family members not to disturb you. Put a sign outside to door to remind them. Some find that the best place for therapy is in their car, but be sure you park in a secure location.

  • If you are in a different location from session to session, be prepared to tell your therapist your address.

There are pros and cons to doing therapy online:

Pros: convenience. You can do therapy while comfortable at home or in your office. There's no driving, searching for a parking spot, or the stress of getting caught in traffic.

Cons: the 'screen' limits the subtle things about being in person with another. Also, the buffer of time between being deep in a feeling and then being right back in your life and tasks isn't there unless you create it. I recommend allowing for a little time to integrate what happened in the session before you jump right back in. It can help to journal, sit quietly, take a walk around the block or mindfully make a cup of tea and savor it while acknowledging the challenging work you are doing.
